Some Things to Note about Men’s Skincare vs Women’s

There is a myth that's bumping around the blogosphere that men's skin is thicker than women's, so they don't need to care as much about skincare routines. But that's not the entire picture.

Even though the dermis in men is 10-20% thicker than in women, the outer layer of this dermis (aka stratum corneum) is the same in men and women. Thus, we can't truly say that men's skin is thicker or tougher than women's.

In addition, men's skin tends to run oilier than women's and has more terminal hairs (thick strong hairs rather than peach-fuzz hairs).

Finally, men tend to focus their skincare routines only on the area of the face that's not covered by hairs (men with beards, we are looking at you). Don't do this - your entire face, hair or not, needs to be taken care of.

All the products mentioned below work the same on men's skin as they would on women's. Even though the packaging might be marketed or skewed towards a certain gender, skincare routines are ungendered! The ingredients themselves are not gender-specific.

If your partner already has some of these products, you should try them out to see how your skin feels with them. Or purchase products that suit your skin and get the perfect skincare routine going for you.

Morning Skin Care Routine for Men

You will need a different skincare routine for the morning as opposed to the evening, as your daytime routine will affect your skin in a different way than your sleep time. Let's look in detail at a typical morning skincare routine that can be adapted to your needs as needed.

Cleanse

Before you do anything with your skincare routine, you need to cleanse your skin of all the oils and dirt that was accumulated overnight. As men's skin tends to run oilier, consider using a face wash or cleanser to do the job. If your skin feels dry, a splash of water is enough.

Treat

Use products with antioxidant serums and vitamin C on clean bare skin so it can penetrate better into your pores. This can help diminish pigmentation, stabilize collagen, and stave off free radicals and oxidative stress.

If you shave in the mornings, then consider doing so after you cleanse (unless you use an electric razor that needs to be used on dry skin). Also, skip the treatment serums and go straight to moisturizing on the days you shave, since shaving can irritate your skin.

Moisturize

Depending on your skincare type (oily, dry, or combination), you will want to choose a different moisturizer. For example, for oily skin, a light water-based moisturizer would work best. For dry skin, you will want an oilier or creamier texture.

Protect

Facial hair cannot protect you from the UVA and UVB rays of the sun. So even if you have facial hair that covers you up like a bear, you will still need to use SPF protection to protect yourself during the day. If you want to cut down a step, choose a moisturizer that has SPF in it.

Do not skip sunscreen even on those days where you spend all day at the office or when it's cloudy outside. And reapply if you are doing something strenuous and sweating a lot.

Evening Skin Care Routine for Men

Once you are winding down for the night and getting ready for some snoozetime, do this quick 3-step routine (4 if you have a beard) and protect your skin even while you sleep.

Cleanse

Daily cleaning is crucial to remove any gunk or grime from your skin. Impurities on your skin will also prevent other active ingredients in your serums and moisturizer from penetrating your skin and doing their job. If you don't cleanse in the morning, make sure to use a mild face wash at nighttime.

Treat

Retinoids help reduce fine lines or wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen. AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) would help peel away the surface of your skin and reveal a more pristine, healthier layer underneath. But if you shave, that already acts like an exfoliant, so you wouldn't need a chemical acid exfoliation on top.

Moisturize

Skin is more permeable while you sleep which allows moisture to seep out easier at night. That's why a denser cream moisturizer at night is recommended.

Beard Oil

You can apply beard oil once a day either in the morning or night, as the last step of your routine. Try to keep the beard oil on your beard, and avoid getting it on your skin as it can clog up your pores and lead to breakouts.
